On Leading the New Generation of Hospitality in Singapore

As Robert Pattenden steps into his role as the General Manager of The Singapore EDITION, he shares with us his vision for the property, its positioning and the evolving landscape of luxury hospitality in Singapore.

When The Singapore EDITION opened its doors in 2023, it heralded a new chapter of luxury in the Lion City. From the neon-pink walls of the lobby bar to the hotel’s verdant biophilic design and the spectacular rooftop pool crowning the 204-room property, every detail announced a contemporary vision of hospitality. The hotel went on to be a striking choice for travellers and locals alike looking for a weekend breather, luxury dining, a wellness break or a long-haul vacation home.

As the luxury hospitality landscape in Singapore continues to evolve, the property is now entering its next chapter under the leadership of General Manager Robert Pattenden. With a career shaped by years of global hospitality experience, Pattenden steps into the role at a time when guest expectations are rapidly shifting and hotels are redefining what modern luxury looks like. Through an email interaction with PEAKLIFE, he reflects on the vision for the hotel, its positioning within Singapore’s competitive luxury market, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

1. What do you love about being in the hotel industry?

Hospitality is one of the few industries where every day is completely different. You meet people from all over the world, each arriving with their own story, and our role is to create moments that become lasting memories. What I find most rewarding is seeing how a team comes together to craft experiences that feel effortless yet meaningful. When service, design, and atmosphere align, the result can be something truly authentic for a guest.

2. Your EDITION journey began at The Sanya EDITION. How did that experience shape your understanding of the brand’s DNA?

Opening The Sanya EDITION was a defining experience. It was the fourth EDITION globally and the first in the Asia Pacific, so it was effectively introducing the brand to an entirely new market.

Working closely with the brand team gave us a deep understanding of the EDITION ethos, ideals, and culture. What stood out was how carefully the brand balances sophisticated service, thoughtful design, and vibrant social energy. EDITION is never just a hotel. It is conceived as a hub where guests can experience great design, exceptional culinary and mixology, music and connection in a way that feels both modern and timeless.

3. Singapore’s luxury hospitality landscape is both competitive and design-forward. How do you plan to differentiate the guest experience here?

Singapore is an incredibly sophisticated market, so differentiation comes from originality and authenticity. At The Singapore EDITION, we focus on creating experiences that feel curated rather than conventional. From culinary concepts to mixology, to milestone celebrations and creative collaborations, we bring the masters of their craft to develop offerings that feel both elevated and unexpected. Combined with the hotel’s design and energy, it all comes together through people who make it what it is: an environment that is vibrant, authentic and distinctly EDITION.

4. Over the next 2–3 years, what measurable transformation would you like to see at The Singapore EDITION?

The ambition is for The Singapore EDITION to continue evolving as one of the city’s most dynamic social and cultural destinations. Beyond traditional hospitality, EDITION hotels are designed to become gathering places for both travellers and the local community.

At the same time, I see a significant opportunity for the brand across Asia Pacific. Guests increasingly resonate with EDITION’s understated elegance and its ability to blend design, individuality and creativity in a way that feels fresh within the luxury space.

5. How important is local curation, and how are you planning to elevate that at The Singapore EDITION?

Local curation is essential to modern luxury. Guests today are not simply looking for beautiful spaces. They want to connect with the destination in meaningful ways.

Our approach is to create experiences that reflect the spirit of Singapore while remaining true to the EDITION aesthetic. Through collaborations, such as Thursday ICONS, unique programming and culinary storytelling, we aim to give guests experiences that feel original to this city and create memories that reflect our EDITION.

6. Singapore has stringent environmental regulations and ambitious green targets. What does it mean for the brand, and how are you embedding it into the daily operations?

Sustainability is increasingly central to how luxury hospitality operates. The Singapore EDITION is proud to hold Platinum Green Mark certification from the Singapore government, which reflects the strong environmental considerations integrated into the property.

Globally, Marriott International is also driving ambitious sustainability initiatives through our Global Climate Action Plan and our localised Marriott Business Councils. Being part of such a large global family allows us to continuously share best practices and innovations, ensuring sustainability becomes embedded in everyday operations rather than treated as a standalone initiative.

7. What does modern luxury hospitality need to prioritise in 2026 and beyond?

Modern luxury hospitality must prioritise authenticity and creativity while never losing sight of the human touch of anticipatory service. Guests are increasingly drawn to experiences that feel thoughtful, personal, and culturally connected. The role of luxury hospitality today is to curate those experiences with sophistication while continuously evolving and challenging the status quo.

8. What is your definition of luxury?

Luxury, to me is defined by rarity and the ability to create something truly memorable. It is about experiences that spark curiosity and create stories that guests carry with them long after they leave. When those moments are delivered with genuine care and thoughtful detail, they become memories that people share for years to come.
