A journey across OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi and OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO revealed two completely different sides of paradise.
Mention the Maldives at a dinner party and someone will inevitably picture an overwater villa, turquoise horizons, and honeymooners dressed in matching linen. It's an image the destination has perfected over the years. But during my recent visit, I discovered there is far more to these islands than romantic seclusion. Over the course of four days, I stayed at two resorts by Atmosphere Core—OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi and OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO—and found myself experiencing two entirely different personalities of the Maldives. One celebrated energy, music, and endless entertainment, while the other invited me to slow down and fall in love with the ocean.
PROPERTY 1: OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi

Just a 15-minute speedboat ride from Velana International Airport, OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi makes a memorable first impression. Derived from the Dhivehi words 'Aila' (family) and 'Fushi' (island), the four-star resort embraces a lively, inclusive spirit. Home to 268 rooms and villas across North Malé Atoll, it revolves around the generous Fushi Plan, where unlimited beverages, all-day dining, complimentary water sports, and entertainment encourage guests to stop watching the clock and simply enjoy themselves.
My Water Villa immediately became my favourite spot on the island. Before unpacking, I found myself sitting on the deck, watching the Indian Ocean shift from brilliant turquoise to deeper shades of blue, already planning my first swim directly from the villa steps.
Evenings at Copper Pot Food Truck served generous surf-and-turf specialities in a beachfront setting, while nights naturally gravitated towards X360, where an in-house DJ, tropical cocktails and foam parties transformed the island into one of the liveliest resorts I'd experienced in the Maldives.

The following morning offered a completely different pace. Breakfast at Element X showcased an expansive buffet before an island tour introduced the quieter corners of Ailafushi. Beyond the music and festivities lies an island immersed in tropical greenery and surrounded by crystal-clear lagoons. Guests can snorkel the house reef, paddleboard, kayak or play beach volleyball before cooling off on the resort's water slide that seems equally irresistible to children and adults alike.

One of the undeniable highlights was dining at ONLY BLU, the largest underwater restaurant in the Maldives. Behind sweeping glass windows, reef sharks, colourful fish and coral gardens became part of the dinner theatre as beautifully plated dishes arrived one after another. The ambience was such that it became difficult to decide whether to admire the food or the marine life outside!
After snorkelling and long evenings, a treatment at ELE|NA Ayur Spa provided the perfect reset. Hidden within lush tropical vegetation, the spa offers Ayurvedic therapies with holistic wellness, while the overwater gym offers another reason to appreciate the spectacular surroundings.
PROPERTY 2: OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO

Nestled at the entrance of North Malé Atoll, the four-star superior resort feels noticeably quieter, allowing nature to take centre stage. Surrounded by one of the region's most celebrated house reefs, the island is designed to immerse guests in its marine ecosystem. My Beach Villa opened directly onto soft white sand, while an open-air bathroom and uninterrupted ocean views made it feel as though the outdoors had become part of the room itself.
The rhythm here encouraged slower mornings. Breakfasts overlooked the lagoon at The Spice, where an impressive spread catered generously to vegetarian travellers, while afternoons were spent discovering secluded corners of the island, often ending with a drink at Raa Bandhi Bar, whose overwater hammocks quickly became my favourite place. As sunset approached, I boarded a traditional Maldivian dhoni for a fishing cruise. The sea was unusually lively that evening, the boat rising and dipping with every wave beneath an amber sky. Somewhere during that journey, I realised that what had always been a distant admiration for the ocean was quietly becoming genuine affection.

That evening also introduced one of the most memorable dining experiences of the trip—a special 9-Hands Dinner at Just Grill. Bringing together chefs from three SENTIDO properties, the multi-course menu celebrated regional traditions through beautifully presented dishes, from Maldivian Coconut Arancini and Purple Cauliflower Supreme to Alexandrian Koshari and a comforting Golden Cairo Om Ali.

The following morning became the defining experience of my stay. Guided by my snorkelling instructor—appropriately named Blue—I ventured onto Helengeli's remarkable house reef. Patiently introducing me to snorkelling techniques, he soon had me floating comfortably above coral gardens while blacktip reef sharks, parrotfish and countless tropical fish swam below. Thanks to Helengeli's unique location, marine life flourishes just metres from the shoreline, making every swim feel like entering a living aquarium.

A visit to the Marine Nature Center, where marine biologist Nur Kamilah explained the island's conservation initiatives, added a deeper appreciation for everything I had seen underwater. Later, a soothing coconut oil massage at ELE|NA Ayur Spa eased away the day's adventures before my final dinner at RAGA Route, whose contemporary Indian menu proved that comfort food always finds a way to travel.

What made this journey so memorable wasn't simply that I visited two beautiful resorts—it was how differently each interpreted the Maldives. Ailafushi celebrates togetherness, vibrant entertainment and carefree island living, while Helengeli reminds you that the destination's greatest luxury is its extraordinary natural world. Together, they offered a fuller picture of the Maldives than I had imagined. Ultimately, I left with unforgettable memories, a newfound confidence in the ocean, and the realisation that paradise can be both wonderfully energetic and beautifully serene.
