Fueled by technology, global exposure, and a thirst for meaningful storytelling, millennial art collectors are breaking traditions and shaping a new era for Asia’s luxury art scene.
The Asian art scene is undergoing a significant shift, with millennials emerging as avid art collectors. It’s no longer limited to deep-pocketed businessmen or industrialist families. New-age art collectors encompass a diverse range of individuals, including millennials, Gen Z, urban-educated professionals, and middle-class enthusiasts.
Mr. Roop Partap Choudhary, who has been a part of this extravagant world, has been interested in collecting art for years and in an exclusive conversation with PEAKLIFE he shares his insights on how the industry is navigating recent trends and indulgence of millennial art collectors in reshaping the artscape.
1. The luxury art scene is evolving rapidly. What is the most transformative shift you’ve witnessed recently, and how is it shaping the future of high-end art collecting in the Asia-Pacific region?
One of the most transformative shifts I’ve witnessed in India’s luxury art market is the rise of millennial and Gen Z collectors who are not only driving demand but also reshaping the entire landscape of high-end art collecting in Asia. According to Christie’s data, over 40% of Christie’s art collectors in the Asia Pacific were millennials, and they witnessed a 65% increase in new Gen Z collectors in the first half of 2023. Not only this, but Sotheby’s and Phillips also reported an increase in millennial buyers over the past few years.
What’s especially interesting is what these younger collectors are choosing to collect; they are embracing art that tells a story. Unlike previous generations who focused on blue-chip, well-known artists, millennials are drawn to works with personal resonance and contemporary narratives, such as sculptures, installations, photography, film, video art, digital art, and prints. With a strong preference for emerging artists, this marks a broader cultural change.
2. Digital art auctions are making headlines and attracting a younger demographic. How do you view this shift? Do you find digital platforms more effective than traditional auctions?
Digital art auctions have played a major role in attracting a younger demographic and connecting them with the art industry. As the world is heading towards a tech-enabled era, post-pandemic scenes have given rise to this trend, and it is here to stay. According to estimates, the online art market is projected to reach $17.76 billion by 2030. While digital art auctions have undoubtedly made the process more convenient and accessible, especially for millennial collectors, I personally still prefer the unique atmosphere of a live auction. There’s something irreplaceable about being present in the room, sensing the excitement and energy of fellow art enthusiasts, and experiencing art as something that should be felt and lived, not just acquired.
3. With millennial collectors driving a surge in contemporary and digital art, how do you strategically blend the preservation of India’s rich heritage with these bold new trends at Noormahal Palace?
Noormahal Palace has a long-standing history, with a legacy that deeply connects guests to the country’s royal heritage and culture. We've always celebrated the timeless artistry that defines India. For me, collecting art and artefacts is about preserving legacies, curating stories, and celebrating the confluence of heritage and design. Each piece in our collection is a testament to history, craftsmanship, and the evolving aesthetic that defines Noormahal Palace. We emphasise the importance of storytelling, ensuring that every experience is tied to the history and culture of our nation.
Our dedicated staff is trained to share insights and tales that connect guests more deeply to the surroundings. Every corner of the palace is adorned with exquisite artifacts that tell stories of the historic past, reflecting our passion for preserving legacies and celebrating the artistry of craftsmanship.
4. In what ways are technology and social media shaping the art collection journey for millennials?
Millennials are not only reshaping the artscape but also redefining how collectors experience and engage with art. Their unique aesthetic preferences, combined with the emergence of advanced technology, are transforming the ways art is created, marketed, and sold. Most importantly, technology and social media have fundamentally changed the art collection journey for millennials. These platforms have made it easier for them to connect with the art world, discover new artists, and explore a diverse range of styles from different regions, periods, and cultures.
5. What are some of the biggest challenges that first-time millennial art collectors face when entering the competitive world of art auctions? And what advice would you give to newcomers on how to successfully navigate and enjoy this complex and exciting journey?
It is quite difficult for first-time millennial art collectors to realise that collecting art is an entirely different thing from simply reading about it. There’s no step-by-step manual or “dummy guide” to follow. The world of art is massive, intricate, and often overwhelming for millennials. It is very important for them to have in-depth research to understand not only the artists and their work but also how the industry works. Keeping an eye on international art auction houses and being aware of current trends can provide valuable insights into them.
Navigating art auctions adds another layer of complexity. The competition can be intense, with many people bidding for a limited number of art pieces, and newcomers must ensure that preparation is key. They should embrace learning about the artworks up for auction, understand the process, and develop a clear strategy before bidding. While in the beginning it may look like a tough competition or make them feel nervous, once they enter the world of auctions, they will find it highly engaging and incredibly exciting.
My advice for them will be to embrace the fact that there’s no set roadmap; every collector’s journey is unique in its own way. Be prepared, do your homework, and take time to learn the technical terms and nuances of the auction process. While the world of art collecting can seem daunting, it becomes truly interesting once they start navigating it with proper learning and confidence. Overall, it’s less about outbidding others and more about discovering art that resonates with you, tells a story, and builds a collection that reflects your personal journey or interests.
