Women Who Lead: Carrying Forward a Legacy

As part of our Women Who Lead series, we speak with Preeti Makhija, General Manager – The Leela Palace, New Delhi, on her vision to sustain its status as one of the city’s most distinguished luxury destinations.

A seasoned leader with extensive experience in the hospitality industry, Preeti Makhija has been an integral part of The Leela group since 2011. Her journey with The Leela Palace New Delhi began during the pre-opening phase when she joined as a Duty Manager and ever since then she has been actively involved in upholding the legacy of the brand and making it a pinnacle of luxury in the national capital. From spearheading high-impact brand activations to forging strategic luxury partnerships, she has consistently contributed to enhancing the hotel’s positioning in an increasingly dynamic market.

Today, as General Manager, she leads with a balanced approach—one that focuses on operational precision with a people-first mindset. Her leadership is rooted in fostering guest affinity, empowering teams, and ensuring that every touchpoint reflects The Leela’s hallmark excellence. In conversation with PEAKLIFE, she reflects on her journey, leadership philosophy, and the evolving landscape of luxury hospitality.

1. How would you describe your journey so far, and how has it shaped the leader you are today?

My journey in hospitality has been both hands-on and deeply formative, shaped by learning the craft from the ground up. Beginning in operational roles gave me a close understanding of how every detail, from guest interactions to behind-the-scenes coordination, contributes to the overall experience. Over time, these experiences shaped my perspective on leadership. In hospitality, leadership is not about hierarchy; it is about setting clear direction, maintaining high standards, and creating an environment where people feel motivated to do their best work. Today, I strive to lead with both strategic focus and empathy, ensuring that operational excellence and memorable guest experiences go hand in hand.

2. What has been the biggest challenge in your journey, and how did you push through it?

Like many professionals, I encountered moments early in my career when stepping into larger responsibilities required both confidence and resilience. The hospitality industry demands high standards, and earning credibility takes time. What helped me navigate those moments was focusing on the work itself – delivering results, learning continuously, and staying committed to the values that define great service.

3. As a General Manager, what is your vision for the property you lead, and how do you ensure your team aligns with that vision?

My vision is to ensure that the property continues to be recognised as one of the city’s most distinguished luxury destinations. Alignment begins with communication and shared purpose. When everyone understands what the brand stands for and the experience we aim to deliver, it becomes easier to maintain consistency across every department. Through mentorship, collaboration, and clear expectations, we ensure that every effort contributes to a seamless and memorable guest journey.

4. What is one moment in your journey, professional or personal, that makes you feel proud?

Some of the most rewarding moments come when you see people rise to the occasion and a collective effort come together successfully. Whether it is the execution of a major event or the launch of a new initiative, watching different departments collaborate seamlessly to deliver an exceptional experience is incredibly fulfilling. There have been many milestone moments that are etched in my heart. One that comes to mind is the AI Summit, which was recently hosted in the city, during which I had the honour of hosting and interacting with numerous leaders from all across the world.

5. How are you consciously giving back to the next generation – especially young women – through mentorship or leadership?

Mentorship is something I consider an essential part of leadership. Throughout my career, guidance from experienced professionals played an important role in my growth. Today, I try to offer the same support to younger professionals, particularly women who are building their careers in hospitality. Encouraging them to take initiative, giving them opportunities to lead, and helping them navigate challenges can make a meaningful difference in their journey.

6. What advice would you give to young women who are building their careers in the hospitality industry?

Be curious, be patient, and stay committed to learning. Hospitality is a profession where experience and perspective develop over time. Seek out opportunities that broaden your understanding of the business, build strong relationships, and remain confident in your abilities. With dedication and consistency, the industry offers immense opportunities for growth.

7. What excites you most about the future, personally and professionally?

The hospitality industry is evolving rapidly, and that makes the future particularly exciting. Guests today seek experiences that feel authentic and meaningful, which challenges us to constantly innovate while preserving the essence of gracious hospitality. Personally, I find great fulfillment in contributing to that evolution and in helping shape the next generation of leaders who will carry these values forward.

8. What is your success mantra?

For me, success means showing up. To show up with your team and support them through everything, and to show up for your guests and ensure you give them the best of what you have to offer. When you remain committed and focused on showing up, the results follow naturally and make everything possible.
